Annual Pinch Reunion Bakeoff
Calories were declared null and void at the Annual Pinch Reunion Bakeoff. A wide variety of desserts was entered in
this year’s contest held at the Heritage Baptist Church. As it turned out, the baker’s oven is no respecter of maturity and experience. The Best of Show was from the Youth Cake category, won by Sailor Lucas with Sailor’s Strawberry Surprise Cake. The committee of the Pinch Reunion Pageant Queens chose Lemon Blueberry Hand Pies baked by Valerie Burgraf as the Annual Queen’s Choice.
Bakers winning a blue ribbon and first place in the various categories were: Adult Cream Pies, Valerie Burgraf with Frozen Snickers Pie; Adult Fruit Pie, Lindsey Jordan for her Peach Cobbler; Adult Cookies, Valerie Burgraf for her Cranberry Lime Macaroons; Adult Sugar Free Pie, Valerie Burgraf for her Key Lime Pie; Adult Savory Pie, Valerie Burgraf for Breakfast Hand Pie; Adult Cake, Cassie McClung, Festive White Cake; Youth Cupcakes, Neveah Cordova with her original recipe for Samoa Surprise Cupcakes; and Adult Cupcakes, Cassia McClung with her Dark Chocolate Cupcakes. Awards were presented at the Wigwam during evening concert.
We are grateful to the judges and the bakeoff committee for another successful year. Judges Were: Matt Holbert of Bricks and Barrels in Charleston, Danny and Sug Sams of The Country Times Newspaper in Clendenin, and Dede Mollohan of Elkview. Susan Hooper, Juanita Bird, and Janet Craig served on the Bakeoff Committee. Junior helpers were Kaylei Naylor, Jr. Miss Pinch Reunion, and Bayleigh McCormick of Kenna. The most revealing comment of the day came from the judges who remarked, “Where do you sign up for next year? “We believe we were the real winners.”
