Farm and Parents Saved Me
Living in the city has its ups and downs. The ups are you are close to all the stores, you get delivery of basically any kind of take-out foods you want, you are close to everything you want to do, close to work, and other perks. But the downs are the noise of cars going by constantly, sirens that seem to be constant, living against each other where you have no privacy, drug deals going down around every corner, it’s so noisy it’s hard to have your windows open at night without all the noises around you and more.
One fall night a few days before Halloween, the weather was unseasonably warm. I decided to leave our window open for the breeze was perfect to sleep by. I laid in bed listening to the sirens in the distance, the sounds of cars, dogs barking, people in distance talking, and other night noises.
After a while, I drifted off to sleep and it was a restless one with dreams of my parents who had been gone for years. it seemed they kept trying to tell me something, but every time I got close enough to hear them, they seemed to start fading away. I was getting so frustrated because I was sure they wanted to tell me something, but I just couldn’t get close enough to hear. The dreams went on half the night before I finally woke up and went to the kitchen for a glass of water.
I was restless after getting the glass of water recalling the vivid dreams of my parents trying to tell me something and not knowing what it was. My parents were the best. They always were watching out for me, helping me with anything I needed, giving the best advice on matters that still to this day I go by, just overall great parents. I decided to go lay back down and try to get some sleep. I laid down and it was eerie quiet, but 4 am not many people or vehicles were stirring in the early morning hours. I heard two cats fighting that should’ve woke the entire neighborhood, but I guess I was the only one with the window open. I was almost back to sleep when I heard this eerie noise. I laid still trying to figure out what it was then it stopped.
A few minutes later the noise was back, but then it dawned on me the neighbor across the street was putting up Halloween decorations yesterday and it must be the decorations they were putting up. Some of them looked scary and must be those that were motion activated. I was almost asleep again and heard the noises that sounded like they were saying my name. I went back to sleep and this time my parents were more vivid in my dreams and were reaching for my hand.
I reached out for theirs and they slowly put theirs down and said, “You need to move to the farm.” The farm was where I grew up and after I finished college, I got a job in the city and never moved back. I visited my parents on a regular basis, but I had grown accustomed to the convenience of city life and it was hard to go back. When the alarm sounded the next morning, I was so worn out I decided to take a personal day off to get rested and to go visit the farm.
As I walked out to the car my neighbor was across the street getting his mail and I mentioned how scary the Halloween decorations sounded, he laughed and said his only looked scary there were no sounds to them. I had chills run up my back. What did I hear last night then?
The farm was about thirty minutes out. It had been close to a year since the last time I was here. It was too painful to visit without my parents being there. I walked in the front door and everything was the same as the day they passed away, close to 7 years ago. Nostalgia overcame me and I decided to spend the night. I slept better that night than I had for years. My mind was made up, I was moving back to the country in my old home place.
I called on my way back to the city and told my boss I needed a few weeks off to get moved and put my house up for sale. When I arrived at my house the police were in front of it. My neighbor across the street came over and I asked what was going on. The neighbor said a bunch of druggies broke into about five houses last night and beat up several neighbors and one died. My house was the last one broke into. The police came out and I explained I had stayed at the farm and they said someone must’ve been watching out for me because the druggies were escalading and my house was the last one and I might’ve been hurt badly, or even killed if I had stayed. They caught the druggies coming out of my house at 4 am. My parents were and always will be watching over me.
