I received a phone call from Connie Sloan on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 that was very disturbing. She was clearly upset and had a right to be. Like many flood survivors she filled out the numerous forms needed for her flooded property at Falling Rock to receive a buyout for her property. After months and months and no word she called Charleston to check on the status of her claim. She was informed by J.D. Whitesell (304-558-5380) that the buyouts are not top priority. The Governor said buying generators and reconstruction was top priority and they would wait to see if any money was leftover for the buyouts. Many residents had to leave their homes and purchase or rent other places. Connie Sloan is paying two mortgages in the belief that she was told she would receive the buyout, now it is low priority and she won’t receive any funds unless some “Might” be leftover?!?! Numerous flooded residents have been waiting since the flood for the “Promise buyouts” and now they find out there probably won’t be any! Money was supposed to been allotted for these buyouts from FEMA, but now the Governor’s office has chosen to buy generators?!? If you have no place to live or trying to pay two payments right now, If you are still waiting for this buyout you were promised, you might want to check your claim status to see if you are “LOW PRIORTY” also.

Due to the increasing cases of COVID-19 in the area, and surrounding areas, we have decided to prolong the Printing of The County Times until it is safer to distribute the papers in businesses. We were hoping to be back by now, but the risks are too high. Please stay safe and hopefully we will be back soon.
Thank you, Sug Sams
