The Country Times – 15 Years & Going Strong!
The Country Times will be celebrating 15-years come March 26th , 2019. March 26th, 2004 was our first official issue. The paper was started from the request of the former Mayor Donna Gillenwater who passed away November 27th, 2013 of a sudden illness. Mayor Gillenwater was a spitfire and go getter. She loved this town and was one of the most dedicated people I ever seen to get out and try to beautify by painting much needed businesses, cut brush, mow, and much more. She had a great sense of humor and was a joy to be around. Mayor Gillenwater encouraged me to start the paper and the first Issue was barely legible and had 11 advertisers in it. We have grown over the years and kept a steady range of advertisers, seen four different Mayors, numerous councilmen/councilwomen, saw the heartbreaking fire of the Dollar General Store, lost former Mayors, seen businesses come and go, Lost many people in our community that was such a big part of it, went through the most devastating flood in our history, and much more.
Through all the trials and tribulations, we only grew stronger and steadier. In 15 years, we have met wondrous people in advertisers, doing articles, and our readers and hope to meet many more in years to come. Since 2004 there has been 4 other newspaper that has been in our town, but The Country Times is the only newspaper still here. It is a lot of hard work and dedication, but we have enjoyed it and glad our advertisers and readers appreciate us as much as we appreciate them. I have stated many times that I am not a professional writer, or verse in the perfect English language, but I give obsess readers something to do with a yellow sharpie marking my mistakes. I think 99.9% get the meaning of what I’m trying to get across with my writings.
I average about one irate reader a year (normally doing election times or when I step on someone’s toes… he, he, he) but, after the first one I received, all the others are hysterical. If they would read what they wrote it is so transparent who wrote it and how petty they were by their words. I love doing my job and look forward to years to come serving the Clendenin, Elkview, Charleston areas. Thank you, for making The Country Times a successful newspaper for 15-years!
